Aortic Aneurysm with a Pericardial Effusion

Older woman sits in front of fireplace with a small, curly-haired dog sitting on her lap.

Florene awoke with severe pain in her chest, radiating to her back. Her family found her lying down in the living room and immediately called 9-1-1. Once the ambulance arrived, it was determined Florene needed critical care, which was unavailable at the local hospital. So, Life Flight Network was requested for immediate transport to a higher level of care. After the Life Flight Network team arrived, Florene was rapidly transferred to the aircraft and was transported to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, Idaho. Upon her arrival to the hospital, she was evaluated, and a CT scan revealed a dissecting aortic aneurysm with a pericardial effusion.

Within one hour of reaching the hospital, she was in surgery. Post-surgery, Florene’s condition improved, and after a little over a month at a rehabilitation center, Florene was discharged to return home. Months later, she was back to her normal routines.

“Thanks to everyone involved and the fast response, I am alive today,” says Florene.
