Life Flight Network’s BJ Miles Receives the 2016 AAMS Jim Charlson Safety Award

Life Flight Network, the largest not-for-profit air medical transport service in the United States, is pleased to announce BJ Miles, Life Flight Network’s Director of Safety and Risk Management, has been recognized by the Association of Air Medical Services (AAMS) as this year’s recipient of the Jim Charlson Aviation Safety Award.

The Jim Charlson Aviation Safety Award recognizes individuals who make significant contributions to the overall enhancement, development, and promotion of aviation safety. Michael Griffiths, Chief Executive Officer for Life Flight Network, states about the award: “To say BJ is passionate and enthusiastic about safety would be an understatement. His tireless efforts help foster a strong safety culture at Life Flight Network. BJ’s goal is to create and be part of an industry leading comprehensive safety program, which makes him an exceptional candidate to receive this award.”

BJ began his aviation career as an aircraft mechanic working on C-130s for the U.S. Coast Guard. This foundation in aviation safety lead to him becoming an MH-65D pilot where BJ flew search and rescue missions from Southern California all the way to Barrow, Alaska. While stationed in Southern California with the U.S. Coast Guard, BJ was a board member of the Professional Pilots Association and a regular contributor to the Southern California Airspace Users Working Group. BJ’s Coast Guard accolades include being named Aviation Safety Officer of the Year while serving as the Safety Officer at Air Station Los Angeles. BJ’s quality management, professionalism, and keen appreciation of standardization laid the groundwork for his career in safety.

Since taking over Life Flight Network’s Safety and Risk Management department in 2013, BJ has shaped Life Flight Network’s comprehensive safety program. He has challenged the status quo, achieving accreditation from both the International Standard for Business Aviation Operations and Helicopter Association International’s Accreditation of Program Safety. Life Flight Network was the first in the world to achieve this dual accreditation. His dedication to detail and standardization also helped Life Flight Network earn continuing certification through the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems and accreditation from National Accreditation Alliance of Medical Transport Applications.

Life Flight Network congratulates BJ on this year’s award, and thanks AAMS for recognizing BJ and the entire team for their efforts.
